CTV.ca News Staff Police stand the perimeter outside the school in Emsdetten, Germany on Monday. The man stormed into the Geschwister Scholl school in Emsdetten at about 9:30 a.m. and fired several shots, police said. The victims included several students, a female teacher, and a janitor. Police spokesman Klaus Laackmann said the injuries were all minor. It was not immediately clear how the assailant died, but Laackmann said the students have been taken to safety. "The building is clear, all the children are safe, the perpetrator is dead," Laackmann told The Associated Press. Laackmann would not elaborate on whether the man committed suicide or whether he was killed by police. The motive of the 18-year-old gunman remains unclear but local media reported that he was a former student of the school. Media also reported that explosive material was found on the body of the man. Experts were attempting to defuse an explosive device attached to the assailant's body, Reuters reported. Emsdetten is a town of about 35,000 located near the Dutch border. There are 693 pupils at the school, aged roughly between 10 and 15 years old. The incident came just months after another gunman walked into his German school and shot dead his former principal. In April 2002, Germany suffered its worst school shooting when a gunman killed 17 people, including himself, at a high school in the eastern city of Erfurt. He reportedly opened fire after refusing to take a math test.

Killer games to be banned?

Berlin. Recently a man ran amok in Emsdetten. This led Bavaria to proposing a ban of so-called killer games in the Upper House (Bundesrat). Bavaria had already proposed a similar ban in 2003, but the then Red-Greens majority had put paid to that. The ban is contentious, as according to support groups, it would not solve the problem. A bigger number of psychologists, social workers and media specialists in schools and leisure centres could make sure media was handled in a competent manner.
